Part of the Brooklyn Zen Center’s core mission is “to engage with the arts with mindfulness.” The members requested a simple, modest, and non-technical design for their new meeting space because they wanted to participate in the renovation by doing much of the work themselves. The demolition yielded a clean, bright, volume calibrated by the inherent structural organization of the building. The scope of the design intervention was limited to only that which was essential for meditation, inquiry, and study.
